Technology Database Communication A NEW-GENERATION LOW-ORBIT SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM
A
New-Generation Low-Orbit Satellite Communications System
Preparations have begun in Russia
to design a new-generation low-orbit satellite communications system (LOSCS)
based on new scientific and design concepts, since they alone can achieve a
superior performance of the new system in comparison to existing ones.
The
new concepts underlying the LOSCS are set forth in dozens of approved patents (Russian
and multinational), which enable us to offer a confident and independent
development of the new communications system. At the Brussels-Eureka-96 World
Show of best inventions, the complex of patents covering the project won a Gold
Medal and a special Gold Prize of the Organizing Committee, the panel of judges
of the Show, and the press.
The proposed system differs from
those already known in several most important performance characteristics:
superior error control, greater specific throughput, greater flexibility and
versatility, including system adaptability to the operational environment and to
user requirements, and the capability to alter the transmission speed from
hundreds of bit/s to many hundreds of kbit/s, assuring the preset error control
and privacy.
The system will use:
-
phase-manipulated
pseudo-random signals, relay satellite onboard signal processing, and
satellite-to-satellite communications (we have proposed original
satellite-to-satellite communication links, whereby all the communication
links are unified, and their operation is simplified and made less expensive);
-
a combination of the most
advanced methods of multiple access (time and code multiplexing, frequency
and space division), which makes for adaptation to the changing requirements
of users and operational environment;
-
distinctly orthogonal signals
for data transmission and end-user terminal synchronization, which also
achieves an adequate flow of status data from each satellite and, hence,
greater coordination and reliability of a complex communications system, and
- signal wave-form compression and multiple
coding, which sharply increases throughput and reduces the error rate.
The system will assure
synchronization not only of subscriber receivers, but - most important of all -
of their transmitters, which drastically simplifies the onboard processing of
group signals from many subscribers, simplifying the relay satellite and making
it less expensive. This implements a new technology of processing heavy flows of
signals on board the satellite.
Protection against unauthorized
access and the required error control will also be achieved by using a unique
code and a time slot assigned by the satellite to each subscriber for each
communication session.
The system will provide for
unified operations and unified components to make the system as a whole simpler
and less costly.
The Russian experts believe that
only a comprehensive discussion and approval of an inexpensive project for the
system will dispel any remaining doubts regarding this system, and make possible
a decision on the cost-effectiveness and economic viability of investing in such
an expensive project. At the same time it is obvious that a promising project
for a global new-generation low-orbit satellite communications system calls for
broad international cooperation.
