Composite high-pressure Compressed Gas Cylinders
А new technology has been
developed for manufacturing superlight high-pressure cylinders from composite
materials for compressed gas transportation and storage. Their aggregate
specifications may be regarded as a qualitative leap forward in improving their
consumer properties.
Compressed gas cylinders are
required in many engineering systems (gas fuel equipment for vehicles, home gas
appliances, rescue devices, devices with autonomous pneumatic sources, etc.),
and therefore improvement of their specifications and production technology (with
mandatory emphasis on improvement of their performance) continues today.
Moreover, this work is now acquiring special importance in connection with the
firmly established global switch of motor transport to gas fuel.
The original design and
engineering decisions used as the basis for creating a hermetic polyethylene
shell reinforced with fiberglass (or organic-fiber) allowed for reduction in the
cylinder weight by three times, increase in corrosion resistance, aggressive
environment impact resistance, fire and blast safety, and guaranteed that they
are shatterproof. In addition, all requirements for products of this kind have
been met, particularly cyclic durability - up to 70,000 charging cycles, reserve
factor after cyclic tests - not less than 2.6, operating temperature range -
from -40 to +80 degrees Centigrade, service life - not less than 10 years.
Cylinder BKP-5-20 has passed the
whole cycle of tests in the All-Russian Aviation Materials Institute.
The technology for manufacturing
6-liter cylinders has been developed. It is simple, reliable and environmentally
sound. Equipment for winding fiberglass and organic-fiber has also been
developed. It has high performance, low power consumption and requires minimal
working space.
Some specifications of new
cylinders, by type, are set forth in the following Table (in this Table
parameters of fiberglass and organic-plastics cylinders are shown as a numerator
and a denominator, respectively):
