TECHNIQUE TO
PREDICT TIME OF EARTHQUAKE AT POTASSIUM MINES
The in-use techniques for predicting the time of
earthquakes at potassium mines include drilling hydro-geological wells and
measuring the underground water level therein, which serves the basis to judge
of the time of the impending earthquake. The proposed technique additionally
provides for measuring the concentration of methane, hydrogen and carbon dioxide
by taking gas samples from the wells. To this end, the wells are drilled within
the contours of well fields down to persalt desalinized layer, 1.5 m below its
bed, then filters are installed at the persalt desalinized layer level to be
followed by fitting in a parker (which is a device lowered on tubes down the
well for separating the bed from the drill string-borehole annular, G.Ch.) to
prevent uncontrolled gas leakage. The judgment of the estimated time of a coming
earthquake is thus made on the basis of the rise of the concentration of methane,
hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
