What
will happen upon global thawing of glaziers?
Nobody doubts that global warming
has come to the planet. According to the scientists’ forecasts, the world
ocean surface level will grow by 1.5 m in the short run.
But
that is the forecast for the nearest years. What will happen if the glaziers
thawing process accelerates and becomes worldwide? Definitely, such a situation
will not emerge in the nearest feature, but may emerge in the centuries to come
when next generations will live.
The worst scenario presumes that
the world ocean surface level will rise by 100 meters. It’s hard to imagine
this situation to be realized. To estimate possible consequences of this
disaster, calculations were carried out on a topographic map of the Earth. The
results obtained are given in the figures. Fig. A shows a current shore contour
of the continents; Fig. B is the same but in case the world ocean surface level
has increased by 100 m.
In this case, unfortunately, as
it can be seen from the pictures, it’s Russia who will suffer worst. Almost
all part of the West-Siberian plate will be submerged. The Black, Caspian and
Aral Seas will unite and overflow. Larger part of rich and productive soils in
the Kuban and Stavropol regions will be overflowed. The “second capital” of
Russia, St.-Peterburg, will sink.
Other countries will suffer as
well. For instance, major part of rich and productive soils in China will be
flooded. Such countries as Bangladesh, the Netherlands and Denmark will
disappear to become an underwater kingdom. However, the shore contour of Western,
Northern and Southern Europe will change a bit. A great deal of the Caribbean
basin and Indonesia’s islands will find themselves under water. Australia will
be split in two by an ellipse-like gulf.
The Amazon River delta and all
the forests located therein will be flooded. Argentina will lose the most rich
and productive fields and plantations and its capital in addition. North America
will suffer not so badly: southern states of the USA will mainly suffer.
Particularly, the Florida peninsula, a resort center by now, will be entirely
flooded.
Africa and Antarctica will suffer
less than the other; these two continents will not practically lose their lands.
