Production of an industry Physics Physical chemistry PULSED NEUTRON GENERATORS
pulsed
neutron generators
The following types of pulsed
neutron generators are currently developed and being produced at VNIIA:
-
generators using sealed neutron
tubes with spark ion sources - generators using vacuum tubes;
-
generators using sealed neutron
tubes with Penning ion sources - generators using gas-filled tubes;
-
generators using sealed chambers
of plasma focus (PF chambers) where neutrons are produced in non-cylindrical
Z-pinch.
According to the purpose all VNIIA
generators may be divided into general purpose generators and logging generators.
Generators
using vacuum tubes
The special feature of such type of
generators is the possibility to generate fast (14 MeV) neutron pulsed fluxes
having neutron yield up to 1010 n/pulse, frequency up to 100 Hz and
pulse width up to 5 microsec. These generators are characterized by simple
schematic diagrams and design, and also by absence of heating circuits, that
allows virtually prompt neutron generation after application of powering voltage.
General purpose generators
These generators (Table 1) include
power supply and control unit (PCU), radiation source (RS), and interconnecting
cable kit (length up to 50 m).

Logging generators
These generators (Table 2)
include power supply and control unit and radiation source which are in
cylindrical bodies of stainless steel with the same diameters. The units are
interconnected by threaded connection. The generators are powered from 150 Vdc
and controlled from external rectangular pulse source having the parameters as
follows:
- pulse amplitude - (15± 1) V;
- pulse width - (10± 1) microsec;
- pulse growing and falling time - not more than
10% of total pulse width at half-amplitude;
- controlling pulse polarity - positive.
At the special request the
logging generators using vacuum tubes may be delivered together with PCU and
interconnecting cable kit of the general purpose generators.

VNIIA neutron generators are
dual-use products, so their delivery requires export license. We need from
customer the international import certificate and signed contract for delivery
of chosen products for the export license issue. The license issue takes 4-5
months. So, an order should be executed within 6-9 months from its receipt
depending on individual generator. The specified prices include delivery cost
and may be changed during negotiations on contract. The generators using (D-D)
tube may be delivered at customer request. Such the generators provide 2,5 MeV
neutron yield approximately 2 orders less than (D-T) generators (specified in
the Tables).
