STEMET
Amorphous Ribbon Solders
Amorphous metal alloys are a new
class of materials with specific properties due to their structural state. Their
amorphous structure is a liquid-like condition of the solid state. The main
feature of this structure is a chaotic arrangement of the atoms, which makes the
solders very strong, corrosion-resistant, magnetically anisotropic,
radioresistant, and completely homogeneous structurally and chemically.
Abroad spectrum of amorphous
solders with the STEMET trademark has been developed in the form of a thin
pliable ribbon for soldering articles made of copper, aluminum, titanium, alloys
based on them, stainless steels, heat-resistant nickel alloys, zirconium,
refractory metals and their alloys, metal-ceramic materials, graphite, ceramics,
and other materials.
The heightened diffusion and
adhesion activity of amorphous alloys on melting makes them suitable for the
soldering and diffusion welding of the most diverse materials.
Because of their brittleness in
the crystalline state, many alloy solders cannot be obtained in the form of a
thin foil by conventional methods and are, therefore, used only in the form of
powders. Amorphous foils of such alloys are strong, flexible, and ductile. The
thin foil of solder is highly convenient for soldering flat surfaces of various
shapes and can, moreover, be stamped into blanks to ensure exact dimensions of
the joint. Amorphous foil can conveniently be inserted directly into assembly
clearances of optimal size in strictly required amounts, which makes for joints
of maximum strength.
The highly homogeneous chemical
composition of the multicomponent alloys and the structure (absence of a
long-range order in the arrangement of the atoms) of amorphous solders assures
narrow soldering intervals and makes it possible to achieve homogeneous joints
without microscopic segregations or gas inclusions. This guarantees strong
soldered joints.
Amorphous solders are also
superior to powdered solders because they are highly efficient, environmentally
clean, assure economical and convenient processes of assembly and soldering, a
good quality of the soldered joint, reduce soldering costs, guarantee the spread
and homogeneity of the solder, its minimal losses, a minimal thickness of the
joint, and quick production of the soldering materials in accordance with the
geometric shape and dimensions of the soldering site.
In manufacturing such items as
vacuum current carriers, the use of STEMET amorphous solders in soldering metals
with ceramics slashes labor intensity to a fraction.
In soldering current-carrying
parts of the collector segments of d.c. machines, the use of the STEMET
amorphous solder has considerably reduced the electric resistance of the
soldered joints, cut the consumption of solder to one-fifth, and completely
dispensed with the use of silver-containing solders.
