NEW ROBOT BRAIN TAKES TO THE SKIES
A new robot 'brain', based in part on the workings of the human inner ear, has enabled the production of the world's first small robotic helicopter that can see and think for itself, say Australian researchers.

BUSY BEES: COMPUTER VISION SYSTEM AUTOMATES ANALYSIS OF BEE ACTIVITY FOR INSIGHT INTO BIOLOGICALLY INSPIRED ROBOT DESIGN
A new computer vision system for automated analysis of animal movement -- honey bee activities, in particular -- is expected to accelerate animal behavior research, which also has implications for biologically inspired design of robots and computers.

DESIGNING A ROBOT THAT CAN SENSE HUMAN EMOTION
Forget the robot child in the movie "AI." Vanderbilt researchers Nilanjan Sarkar and Craig Smith have a less romantic but more practical idea in mind.

ROBOTS POWERED BY THE OCEAN ITSELF
They call them "gliders," but these move through water instead of air. Two new robotic gliders - autonomous underwater vehicles - powered by changes in their own buoyancy or by different temperature layers in the ocean - will be tested operationally off Southern California this winter. Both gliders were developed with support from the Office of Naval Research.

TOMORROW'S SUPER ROBOTS MAY OWE THEIR MOBILITY TO A COCKROACH’S LEGS TODAY
The marriage of machine and biology requires adopting the pliability and strength from the legs of this despised insect The cockroach is an insect despised for its ubiquitousness, among other reasons. Yet, it may hold a key to the next evolutionary step in the "life" of robots.

INEEL'S SUPER-HARD STEEL ONE OF THIS YEAR'S TOP 100 TECHNOLOGICAL ACHIEVEMENTS
Super Hard Steel forms a tough, low cost, wear and corrosion resistant coating that outperforms traditional high-performance coatings. Developed at the Department of Energy's Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory, this coating offers a wealth of possibilities for new industrial applications.
