| APPLICATION OF RADIOACTIVE INDICATORS FOR MAIN PIPELINES DIAGNOSIS |
| A traditional method applied today to diagnosis main pipelines condition by means of radioactive indicators includes an intelligent pigging, registration of the pig coordinates and radioactive indicators’ gamma radiation level, and consequent determination of location and nature of a defect based on the analysis of the received data.In the newly-developed technology, natural radionuclides containing in a pumping-through medium and natural radionuclides decomposition products accumulated over the pipeline operation period on a pipeline wall and in the soil adjoining the outer pipeline wall are used as radioactive indicators. Gamma radiation of the said radionuclides is registered and pipeline sections with increased total gamma radiation level of the said radionuclides are selected. Gamma radiation of short-living isotopes and low-energy radiation of radionuclides are separated. To define a defect nature, gamma radiation of short-living isotopes is compared with the total gamma radiation and/or low-energy
gamma radiation at the selected pipeline wall section.
